There are four centres in Victoria at Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings and work is carried out by a small number of staff, chaplains and volunteers who give freely of their time every day of the year.
Each centre houses the ‘Flying Angel Club’, a place where seafarers can contact their families by phone or internet, and receive support during times of injustice or distress.
While most seafarers are well treated, some are still abandoned in ports far from their homes, or are unpaid for their work, or forced to work in unsafe or unacceptable conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic has also exacerbated conditions and now, more than ever, the Mission plays a vital role in providing practical care and support.
